Tone - Definition

Dictionary Definition: the overall lightness or darkness of an area of an image, similar in meaning to "luminosity"

  • Lightness
  • Darkness
  • Contrast
  • Range
  • Luminosity
  • Dimensions

Tone is shown in this image through the use of a black and white effect, tone defines the contrast between the different colours on the leaves and the raindrop. Depth is also shown in this photograph because the background is blurry compared to the focal point of the image, this gives the photograph a more 3d effect.
The use of black and white effects brings out the tone and contrast in this photograph. The use of many different lines also give the viewer a more pleasant view of the image because all the different lines in different directions all point to the focal point of the image.
In this photograph, shades of brown are used to show tone and exaggerates the contrasts between all the items in the photographs. Depth is also shown in this image which leads the viewers eye to seeds the converging lines of the photograph.
Tone is also shown through the use of black and white effects in this photograph which also shows off the contrast in the image. The diagonal lines make this photograph look very effective because it leads the viewers eye to the focal point on the image.

My Definition: Tone is the contrast in lightness and darkness in a photograph, usually shown through one main colour.
